Lee Westwood remains a minor doubt for this month's Ryder Cup, although his agent insists he is confident his client will recover from tonsillitis in time for the match at Valhalla.

Westwood contracted a serious bout of the illness whilst playing at the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles just over a week ago.

The 35-year-old has since been laid low and was forced to pull out of the Omega European Masters in Switzerland last weekend.

He had been hoping to return to action at this week's European Tour event, the Mercedes-Benz Championship in Cologne, but is still not well enough to compete.

But his representative - Chubby Chandler - has played down concerns the Englishman might not be fit in time for the match at Valhalla which gets underway on September 19.

"Lee is slowly recovering from this illness and we are sure it will not affect his chances of taking part in the Ryder Cup," Chandler told The Guardian.

"There is no concern from him or us on that regard."
