India chairman of selectors Dilip Vengsarker has called for less one-day internationals in favour of more Test matches.

And his thoughts have been echoed by Sri Lanka chairman Arjuna Ranatunga, upset that next year's proposed tour of England has been postponed due to a clash with the Indian Premier League.

Vengsarkar says the recent trend of cutting Test series to two matches - as is the case when England tour later this year - is to the detriment of the game and directly related to the number limited-overs matches the players are being asked to take part in.

"We play around five to seven ODI games on every tour," Vengsarkar said. "This takes away 14 to 20 days. Personally, these two-Test series do not make much sense to me. It should either be three or five."

Ranatunga, who led Sri Lanka to victory in the 1996 World Cup, added: "I am a great believer you need Twenty20 to get more money, but ultimately you have to realise that Test cricket is the major thing.

"It's very important to preserve Test cricket. When it comes to Twenty20, it's more like a business as far as I am concerned."

Vengsarkar added that he was not a big fan of the IPL, saying the big-name players should take part in more domestic cricket, while questioning whether such tournaments produce stars of the future.

"Twenty20 is an exciting and popular format but tell me five cricketers from the IPL who can play for India?" he said.

"A lot of players got exposure but are they good enough to play for India? Test cricket will produce players for Twenty20, not the other way round.

"You need international stars to take part in domestic cricket to raise the standard, otherwise it would become very hard to judge quality and temperament for Test cricket.

"But due to a packed calendar, international cricketers have no time for domestic cricket."
