BY MARKO ILIC Current lightweight champ BJ "The Prodigy" Penn will collide with former champ Sean "The Muscle Shark" Sherk in the main event of UFC 84 scheduled for May 24. The lightweight title is on the line and it seems that UFC has no trouble hyping up this bout as the two really don't like each other. "He's been broken before, and he's been broken bad," claims BJ Penn. "If you wanna be the champ, you gotta beat the champ," responds "The Muscle Shark". Sherk feels that his belt was taken away from him for something he didn't do. Or did he? "We're gonna fight for the steroid championship," smiles Penn. |

However, the steroid scandal is behind "The Muscle Shark" now, and he's looking forward to getting his belt back. In order to do that he will have to beat BJ Penn, who crushed Joe Stivenson for the interim title.
"The Muscle Shark" is a cardio machine. Not only would his training regime kill an average man, but it would make an average MMA figher vomit.
Sherk relies heavily on his conditioning. He keeps pressuring his opponents until they quit. He loves to shoot and take down his foes, but he is often criticized for being unable to finish them. He will definitely push the pace and test Penn's cardio.
Should fight go into the later rounds, Sherk's athleticism may decide the winner. He will try to wear "The Prodigy" down, work some ground and pound, hoping for a late-round stoppage or a decision.
In my humble opinion, "The Muscle Shark" should work more on his submissions. He's a great wrestler, and improving his BJJ would be a great asset to his ground game.
BJ Penn is one of the most talented fighters in the UFC. The first non-Brazilian to ever win the BJJ World Championships, heavy-handed, dangerous on his feet as much as on the ground, "The Prodigy" presents a nightmare for everyone who dares to challenge him in the octagon.
His only "enemy" is his cardio. And he's well aware of that. "I got just enough cardio to put you away, Sean," says Penn. BJ Penn's best chance of winning this battle is in the first two rounds.
"I shouldn't be saying that I want to take him out in the first round... But I want to take him out in the first round," claims Penn.
The world BJJ champ is very dangerous when working off his back and once Sherk ends up in Penn's guard, it would be a chance for the 30-year-old Kailua native to pull off a submission.
Prediction: "The Prodigy" - 2nd round, rear naked choke.
