Sweden's Annika Sorenstam captured her 70th LPGA Tour title with victory in the season-opening SBS Open in Hawaii. The former world number one ended 10 under to win by two shots from Russamee Gulyanamitta, Laura Diaz and Jane Park. The 37-year-old Sorenstam was winless in 2007 and limited to 13 events because of back and neck injuries. "I could not have asked for a better start," Sorenstam said. "We all have talked so much about 2007. I think it's time to talk about 2008." Last year was the first season since 1994 that Sorenstam, who has triumphed in 10 women's majors, failed to win a tournament. Her last victory came at the State Farm Classic in September 2006. "I'm obviously very, very thrilled. It's great to win tournaments. There's some tournaments that mean a little bit more and they come at a special time. I would say this is one of them," Sorenstam said. Erica Blasberg, who was tied with Sorenstam for the lead entering the final round, stumbled to a two-over 74 and finished five strokes adrift. Defending champion Paula Creamer closed with a 69 to finish at four under, while Mexico's Lorena Ochoa, who overhauled Sorenstam at the top of the women's game, was not playing. Sorenstam, whose closing 69 included four birdies and one bogey, said she wanted this tournament more than any other in the past year. "Last year, the desire wasn't there," Sorenstam said. "And my swing was definitely not there. "Now it is. And, like I said, those are two important components you need to play well to be the top player out here." |
