Ronnie O’Sullivan (Eng) v Liu Chuang (Chn)

In recent seasons, Ronnie O’ Sullivan has felt that the people presiding over the draw in this tournament have had it in for him.

It is easy to understand the Rocket’s mind set too, given that he has faced first round matches against Marco Fu, Stephen Maguire and Ding Junhui in recent renewals of this tournament.

Surely O’ Sullivan cannot have any complaints about his draw this time around as he is playing an opponent making his debut at the Crucible and indeed making his debut in the televised stages of a tournament outside of his homeland.

Chuang deserves some respect on the strength of his victory in the final qualifying round against Dominic Dale, a player who has a ranking tournament victory to his name this season.

O’ Sullivan is in a good part of the draw, with many of the Crucible long match specialists who like to grind him down finding themselves in the other part of the draw.

His biggest dangers in his half of the draw are Ryan Day and Ken Doherty, but O’ Sullivan will surely look at his draw and think that a run to the final is in his own hands.

Chuang’s first visit to the Crucible will be one he will not forget and at 17 years old, he is bound to return again and build on his experience.

But O’ Sullivan’s biggest threat in this match is complacency, so long as he is sufficiently motivated then he will win the match without breaking into a sweat. Prediction: O’ Sullivan 10-3 Chuang
