Shaun Murphy (Eng) v Dave Harold (Eng)

It is three years since Shaun Murphy announced himself on snooker
s grand stage by winning the World Championship when ranked number 48 in the world and in doing so becoming only the second unseeded player to win the biggest prize in snooker since it took residence in Sheffield in 1977.

Since then, Murphy has undoubtedly proven that his title success was no flash in the pan and he comes into this tournament ranked as the provisional world number one.

Yet despite that, Murphy surprisingly has only two successive Malta Cups to parade on his mantelpiece in the way of silverware. He could have had several other trophies too such has been Murphy
s consistency in the past couple of seasons, but he has just been edged out in various semi-finals and finals.

This seasons Grand Prix semi-final was a classic example, 5-3 up on Ronnie OSullivan and in sight of a final against Marco Fu he would have been favourite to win and a maiden win against the Rocket to boot.Yet O

Sullivan fought back by winning the next three frames and secured a place in the final, which he unexpectedly lost.

Murphy will be able to count upon plenty of backing at the Crucible given that he resides just down the road in Rotherham and that fervent home backing will surely help him progress in this tournament.

He will be quite pleased with his first round draw. Dave Harold is a great stalwart of the game, the third oldest player in the draw and a player who personifies the phrase
solid pro.

He will give Murphy a sufficient enough work-out in this match to prepare him for tougher matches that lie ahead, but ultimately Murphy will know he should have enough about him to win the match.

Harold
s tactics will revolve around trying to slow Shaun Murphys game down, as Murphy is very fluent once he gets amongst the balls and is a fearless potter. But while Harolds safety play will provide Murphy with a test, I do not see him compiling enough significant breaks to win frames in one visit, which he will need to do in order to put Murphy under pressure.

I expect Murphy to have too much class and ammunition for Harold to deal with. Prediction: Murphy 10-4 Harold
