BY JOE ASHDOWN
joe.ashdown@oddspreview.com Stephen Lee (Eng) v Joe Swail (Nir) Not one of the glamour draws of the first round but nonetheless a difficult match to call owing to the inconsistency of the two players on show.Stephen Lee is one of the rare throwbacks to snooker’s heyday, a man for who exercise means walking round the table to play his shot and whose idea of a balanced diet is probably likely to be a kebab every night of the week. Lee, much like Mark Williams, enjoyed his best days around the turn of the millennium and he does have four world ranking titles to his name. The last of which was the Malta Cup in 2006 which some observers thought might herald a renaissance in the Trowbridge man’s career. That has not proven to be the case, however, although Lee did surprise many, not least himself, by reaching the final of the Masters in January.Lee ’s run to the final was helped by him playing a succession of opponents who had an off day when they faced him.The less said about Lee’s performance in the final at Wembley the better as, having won the first two frames against Mark Selby, he capitulated fast and won only one further frame in a 10-3 defeat which at times was painful to watch.Losing to Selby was no disgrace but Lee at times looked like a club player who was picking up a cue for the first time in a while and memories of that defeat will surely stay with him. Joe Swail is a player who has not delivered on his early potential. He first played at The Crucible back in 1992 and in his early days he was marked down as a future world champion. Two appearances in the semi-finals at The Crucible as an unseeded player not withstanding, it is fair to say Swail’s career has not delivered close to what it initially promised to.That said, Swail has proven before that he enjoys the long match format and relishes playing at The Crucible, so in a one-off match against Lee he will prove a tough opponent. It really boils down to which player has the greater capacity to convert frame winning positions and after Lee’s capitulation in the Masters, I find it hard to favour him in this match.Swail to win an error strewn match likely to have several long and scrappy frames. Prediction: Lee 8-10 Swail
