BY JOE ASHDOWN
joe.ashdown@oddspreview.com Ken Doherty (Ire) v Liang Wenbo (Chn) The last match in the top half of the draw sees the 1997 champion Ken Doherty in action against another Chinese debutant. Popular Dubliner Doherty is one of the game’s elder statesmen now but he remains one of the dangerous dark horses in the draw, he particularly enjoys the long match format and saves his best performances for the toughest of opponents.Doherty became a father for the first time at the end of last year and while fatherhood can sometimes soften a sportsman’s competitive desire, in Doherty’s case the mellowness this has brought to his life has actually helped his snooker and his performances have benefited from his more relaxed approach in the second half of the season. It took an excellent performance by Mark Selby to eject him from the Masters in the semi-finals, after Doherty had produced a stirring comeback to beat Shaun Murphy in the previous round, a match in which Doherty hit three century breaks in the last four frames. When Ronnie O’ Sullivan will have reviewed the draw, he will have been largely happy with his lot but he will not have been pleased to find Doherty in his half of the draw and a potential quarter-final opponent. Doherty represents the greatest barrier between O’Sullivan and a place in the final and Doherty’s excellent safety play would be a stern test of both O’ Sullivan’s tactical play and his temperament should their meeting come to fruition. The main danger to Doherty with this match is that he is a notoriously slow starter in tournaments. Like a tail end slogger, he can be vulnerable early on but once he gets his eye in, he becomes very difficult to shift. Wenbo is likely to be an unknown quantity to him and from Doherty’s point of view, that makes him the worst kind of opponent in some respects. At least with O’ Sullivan and Higgins, Doherty will know his opponent’s game inside out and know what their relative weaknesses are. With Wenbo, he will have to make that assessment while the match is in progress. Even allowing for Doherty’s vulnerability against less heralded opponents in the early stages of tournaments though, it is hard to see an upset occurring here.Doherty enjoys playing in Sheffield and you sense that he feels he has one more big title victory in him before he packs his cue away. As the draw has worked out, he probably will not get many better opportunities. Prediction: Doherty 10-4 Wenbo
