BY JOE ASHDOWN
joe.ashdown@oddspreview.com Allister Carter (Eng) v Barry Hawkins (Eng) To the casual observer, this is unlikely to be a match that will stir the imagination as neither player could lay claim to being amongst the green baize’s more household names. Scratch a little deeper beneath the surface though and in fact this could be one of the best matches of the first round.Essex born Carter has a professional pilot’s licence and has stated that when he retires from snooker, he plans to swap 147s for 747s by making a career from being a commercial pilot. The aviation industry may have to wait some time for its gain however, as Carter has climbed up the rankings in the past three seasons and is now up to a provisional ranking of eleventh in the world. For a player on the fringes of the world’s top 10, it is perhaps surprising that Carter has never reached a major final. His opponent Hawkins sometimes practises with Carter and the pair met in the UK Championship in December when Carter let slip an 8-3 lead and allowed Hawkins to win 9-8 and book a place in the quarter-finals. On the past couple of seasons, that would be seen as a surprise result but it is worth remembering that Hawkins too was a member of the top 16 for one season just a year ago, but his stay was brief due to a succession of first round exits including one in Sheffield. Hawkins’ form this season has continued to be patchy, but he has had his moments and his appearance in the last eight of the UK Championship would seem to suggest that longer matches are more to his liking.Having dropped to 29 in the world, he could do with getting past the first round to ensure he remains in the top 32 for next season, the bare minimum for a player who clearly has some talent. Carter will be a tough nut to crack but Hawkins has beaten him before and having recorded previous victories over the likes of Ronnie O’ Sullivan and Stephen Hendry, he certainly seems to find his best performances when taking on better players. As in Telford, I expect this one to go to the wire and putting my head on the block, I predict the same outcome in a match which will be better than its low key billing. Prediction: Carter 9-10 Hawkins
