Ryan Sidebottom believes England can chase around 300 on the final day and win the first Test against New Zealand after his dramatic hat-trick. The Kiwis slumped from 99-1 to 147-8 and an overall lead of 269, with Sidebottom claiming 5-37. "Two or three times I've been on a hat-trick in my career but never got it. It's an even nicer feeling to get it in a Test," he said. "Hopefully we can get two early ones and knock the runs off." Sidebottom reverse-swung the ball to devastating effect as he dismissed Stephen Fleming at the end of his ninth over before removing Mathew Sinclair and Jacob Oram at the start of his 10th. "We put the ball in the right areas, the ball was reversing and you're in the game when it reverses," the Nottinghamshire star, who has 9-127 in the match so far, added. "We're on a high at the moment but it's a big session, the first hour. We'd like to get them out for under 20 more runs and believe we can chase 300. "It shows how things can change in an hour or so. It was drifting, but a couple of wickets and poor shots got us back in the game. "It's stll a big total but the guys are confident." Fleming believes the Kiwis paid the price for forcing the pace after England's slow scoring in their first innings. But he feels his team are still in the driving seat and in a good position to go 1-0 up in the series. "England took some time out of the game at two runs an over and whenever a team's looked to up the ante, they've made mistakes," the former Black Caps skipper explained. "We've had to force our hand because of the wickets we've lost but it could be a positive thing for us. "This is probably a worst-case scenario. We'd love to be comfortable going into the last day. "England will be happy with their afternoon's work. I don't think they've earned it but we've gambled to get ourselves in a winning position and that's where we think we are. "Having them score at a higher rate could be our only chance. If the batsmen are loking to score that gives opportunities." |
