Serena Williams won the 29th singles title of her career with a straight-sets victory over Switzerland's Patty Schnyder at the Bangalore Open. Williams, who beat her sister Venus in the semi-finals on Saturday, came through 7-5 6-3 in Sunday's final. It was an inconsistent performance from the American, who let a lead slip before winning the first set and came back from a break down in the second. But Williams gathered herself to win the final five games and seal victory. "It was so nice being in India and winning the title made it even better," said the third seed, who missed the preceding event in Paris because of dental surgery. "A week back I was not even sure I will be able to play, so to win my first title of the year makes it a very special visit." Schnyder said: "I tried my best but lost it in the second set. "Hopefully we will meet again this year and I will be able to beat her.
"This was my first visit to India and I loved it. I am sure I will be back next year." |
