River Proud could head to Royal Ascot @ Tuesday 20 May 2008, 03:36 PM

River Proud could be heading to Royal Ascot with trainer Paul Cole considering supplementing the colt for the St James's Palace Stakes.

The three-year-old's recurring problems with the starting stalls once again cost him when he was third in last weekend's French 2,000 Guineas at Longchamp.

He was forced to start from the widest stall before producing a tremendous late run to almost snatch second place behind winner Falco.

Cole said: 'He won't be going for (this weekend's) Irish 2,000 Guineas because he gave himself such a hard race from such a awkward stall but he could be supplemented for Ascot.'

Cole has Ascot in mind for Saturday's Newbury winner Strategic Mission.

The trainer added: 'He could go for the King Edward VII Stakes. He wants a trip and is a scopey horse with a good temperament. We like him.'

Cole is considering the Coventry Stakes for useful two-year-old Shampagne but revealed his main aim for the colt is a £300,000 sales race at York's Ebor meeting in August.

Cole said: 'I really want to concentrate on the Doncaster BS St Leger Yearling Stakes race. SIx furlongs are going to suit him better than five and the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot is shaping up into a competitive race.'
