Controversial pace bowlers Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif have both been named in Pakistan's preliminary 30-man squad for the ICC Champions Trophy. Shoaib has been cleared to play after his 18-month ban for breaches of discipline was suspended by a high court judge in Lahore until September. Asif's inclusion is dependant on a report from the PCB investigation into his detainment in Dubai in May under suspicion of carrying drugs. The duo and trouble seem to go hand-in-hand, with the pair at the centre of doping scandal ahead of the 2006 Champions Trophy - although both were later cleared on appeal. |
Then ahead of the Twenty20 World Cup in 2007, Shoaib was sent home in disgrace after hitting Asif with a bat following a dispute.
"We have included Shoaib Akhtar's name in the list of 30 probables for the ICC Champions Trophy along with Mohammad Asif and Umar Gul," said chief selector Salahuddin Ahmed.
"But, while Shoaib and Umar have to prove their fitness, Asif's selection will largely depend on the report of PCB's fact-finding committee."
