Oh Ji-Young and Pat Hurst both fired a six-under 67 to seize a share of the lead after the first round of the US Women's Open in Minnesota.

Oh, who turns 20 next month, rolled in six birdies in her first 12 holes at the Interlachen golf course.

American Hurst overcome a poor start before closing with a birdie on the final hole to also shoot a 67.

On a day when scores were surprisingly low due to soft greens and little wind, Oh had a one-stroke lead over South Korean compatriot Song-Hee Kim, with Swede Louise Friberg, Colombian amateur Maria Uribe and South Korean Ji-Yai Shin two shots behind.

World No.1 Lorena Ochoa carded a 73, two strokes better than Annika Sorenstam.

American Michelle Wie was near the bottom of the pile after an frustrating 81 that included a quintuple bogey at the par-4 ninth, where she took six strokes to hole out from over the back of the green.

But Oh enjoyed a great day with her irons, making most of her birdies from close range.

"I think this course suits my game pretty well, so I'm pretty confident this week," she said. "I made seven birdies today and the longest was maybe 12 feet."

England's Laura Davies showed why she had been looking forward to a return visit to Interlachen Country Club with a three-under-par 70 in the opening round.

Big-hitting Davies, who won the title back in 1987 and is playing in her 23rd successive Open, began her bid for a fifth major with a haul of five birdies over a course that measures 6,789 yards and is the longest in the championship's history.

"I played here in the Solheim Cup (in 2002) and I've been saying ever since they announced the venue that I was really looking forward to playing a US Open at Interlachen," said Davies.

Scot Catriona Matthew also shot three under - three strokes behind leader Oh.
