The New Orleans Saints have signed veteran quarterback Mark Brunell on a two-year deal.

The 37-year-old spent the past four seasons with the Washington Redskins but dropped down the depth chart last year.

He did not take a single snap despite starter Jason Campbell getting injured. Todd Collins took over under centre for the rest of the campaign.

A three-time Pro Bowler, Brunell will now compete with Jamie Martin and Tyler Palko to be starter Drew Brees' back-up.

The former University of Washington student was originally drafted by the Green Bay Packers before being traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

In his 15 year career he has passed for 31,826 yards and 182 touchdowns with 105 interceptions. He has also rushed for 15 scores.
