The Detroit Lions have released running back Kevin Jones and defensive end Kalimba Edwards.

Jones was selected in the first round - 30th overall - of the 2004 draft by the Lions and has subsequently rushed for 3,067 yards and 24 touchdowns in 53 games.

But the 25-year-old's last two seasons have ended prematurely due to injury, prompting a parting of the ways.

Edwards, 28, has also spent his entire six-season professional career in the Motor City after being chosen in the second round of the 2002 draft.
