The Green Bay Packers will retire Brett Favre's famous number four jersey during the upcoming NFL season.

The Packers have already held initial talks with the recently retired quarterback legend, and just have to finalise what game they perform the ceremony at.

Favre announced his retirement at an emotional press conference at the start of March, after breaking almost every quarterback record in the book.

The 38-year-old enjoyed 17 seasons at Lambeau Field, including one Super Bowl title, and was just one game away from a return to the big show in what turned out to be his final year.

Such was his achievements in a Green Bay jersey, along with his personality and style both on and off the field, that the Packers have unsurprisingly decided to retire his famous number four shirt.

"I would say it was a no-brainer," said Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy.

"Obviously what Brett's done for the Packers and for the league as a whole, it was a pretty easy decision to retire his number."

The team and Favre will now decide which game to perform the ceremony at during the new season.

"I had a very brief conversation with him, and he's looking forward to coming back," Murphy added.

"I really don't have details worked out. Once we get the schedule, we'll take a look at it and figure out the best way to honour him, but definitely we want to retire his number."

Murphy added that a further step could even be to build a monument or statue of Favre outside Lambeau Field.

"I think that's something we'll look at," Murphy said. "We will honour him in the appropriate way.

"Obviously for what he's done to the Packers, we want to make sure we do something special for him."

The Packers have retired five jerseys during their history - Tony Canadeo's No. 3, Don Hutson's No. 14, Bart Starr's No. 15, Ray Nitschke's No. 66 and Reggie White's No. 92.

"It was a very emotional decision for him to retire, but I wanted to let him know that obviously the Packers have tremendous respect for him, and obviously it's a great honour for him," added Murphy.

"I think he was honoured and he's looking forward to it."
