Brett Favre says that he is involved in a stalemate with the Green Bay Packers after two meetings with team officials upon his return to Lambeau Field.

After a late-night meeting with coach Mike McCarthy, Favre held just a short meeting with the coach and general manager Ted Thompson on Tuesday before quickly leaving Lambeau Field.

Talks seem to have brought the two sides no nearer a mutually agreeable conclusion but it does seem that Favre's returning to training with Green Bay has now been ruled out.

The former Super Bowl winner and thee-time league MVP says he is desperate to play but the Packers want to go with Aaron Rodgers as they starting triggerman next season.

Green Bay also do not want to release Favre, which would allow him to join another team for nothing, while a trade seems to be difficult to agree on with the veteran obviously wanting to join a team capable of reaching the Super Bowl, while the Packers would rather see him join a lower-ranked team.

"We're at a stalemate," Favre told ESPN.

"So they can say they welcome me back but, come on, the way they've treated me tells you the truth. They don't want me back, so let's move on."

What now does seem certain is that the Packers do not want Favre back in a playing capacity and he will not likely be turning out on the field in practice.

"(McCarthy) and I both agreed last night that me being out there is a distraction and will continue to be a distraction," Favre added.

"We all know the reason I'm here is because the commissioner reinstated me, so we have a lot of things to figure out.

"It's simple and complicated, both at the same time."

What makes matters more complicated is the money involved, with Favre set to pocket $12million in wages if he stays with the Packers even if he does not play.

The club could get that money off their salary cap should they release him, but they would then face the prospect of him playing for a major rival, probably Minnesota, without receiving any compensation.

A trade has always been the most suitable option but again finding a suitable, and interested, team is proving problematic.

Green Bay have even offered Favre $20m over the next ten years just to stay in retirement, but the NFL legend appears hell bent on playing at least one more season.
