The San Francisco 49ers have cut Trent Dilfer, possibly bringing the curtain down on the veteran quarterback's career.

Dilfer, 36, started seven games for the 49ers last season after first-choice starter Alex Smith went down with a shoulder injury.

But he missed the last three games due to a concussion suffered in the week 14 fixture against the Minnesota Vikings.

"Trent Dilfer is a true professional in every meaning of the word," 49ers coach Mike Nolan said.

"He is one of the most respected players in the league for good reason.

"Trent has provided greater value to our team over the past two years in terms of his leadership, knowledge of the game and play on the field."

Dilfer's finest hour came in 2001 when he led the Baltimore Ravens to victory at Super Bowl XXXV.
