Newcastle begin search for a new manager @ Friday September 5

Newcastle will begin their search for a new manager on Friday following the resignation of Kevin Keegan on Thursday evening.

Gus Poyet is the bookies favourite to replace Keegan, but Everton boss David Moyes and Didier Deschamps are believed to be in the frame.

Deschamps worked with Newcastle's executive director Dennis Wise at Chelsea and is currently out of work.

More importantly for Newcastle's owner Mike Ashley and the management team, Deschamps is used to working within a management team similar to the one the Magpies have and would likely be comfortable working alongside Wise.

Moyes has been stalling on signing a new contract at Everton for some time and with club owner Bill Kenwright this week admitting the club need a takeover if the club are to progress, the Scot could be tempted by a move to the North East.

But whether Moyes would want to work alongside Wise is unknown.

Although Poyet has worked with Wise before, its unclear whether he would be interested in the role and is understood to be happy in his current role at Tottenham.

Alan Shearer has again been linked to the position, along with former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier and Alan Curbishley, who quit West Ham just 24 hours before Keegan left Tyneside.
