Colin Montgomerie's run at the Accenture Match Play Championship was ended by American Stuart Cink, who won 4&2 to book his place in the quarter-finals in Arizona. Britain's interest in the tournament was ended completely when Paul Casey lost to KJ Choi, while Tiger Woods was pushed into extra holes by Aaron Baddeley and defending champion Henrik Stenson battle through again. Monty had been in good form in Tucson, beating Jim Furyk and Charles Howell III, but he could not quite last the pace as Cink closed out a tight encounter in the closing stretch. The Scot started well by taking the first hole, a lead he held until the fifth when a bogey six allowed Cink to bring the match back to all square. Cink birdied the tenth to go ahead in a tight encounter, but another birdie at the 13th seem to break Montgomerie's resistance, and back-to-back birdies at 15 and 16 put the gloss on a 4&2 win for the American. "Sometimes you can't explain golf," said Cink. "I didn't really feel I had control of my ball today off the tee and I think Colin would agree with that. "It was ugly but I scrambled my rear end off and made a lot of good putts." Cink now faces US Open champion Angel Cabrera in the quarter-finals, after he strolled into the last eight with a clinical 4&3 victory over number three seed Steve Stricker. The Argentinian was in great form and lost just one hole as he got to the turn in total control at 4up, and a par four on the 15th was all he needed to seal the match 4&3. Defending champion Henrik Stenson is still in with a shout of retaining his title after a narrow 1up victory over Jonatahn Byrd. The Swede was never behind in the match bit it was nip-and-tuck all the way, with only a birdied on the 17th preventing Stenson from having to go extra holes again. Next up for Stenson will be Woody Austin, who coasted to a 3&2 win over Boo Weekley, who could not repeat his victory over Sergio Garcia in the second round. Justin Leonard continued his good run with a 3&2 success over Stuart Appleby to book his place in the last eight. Leonard will face Vijay Singh, who rallied from 2-down with two holes to play to beat Rod Pampling on the 25th hole. |
