Middlesbrough ready to move for Smith @ Tuesday 13 May 2008, 01:53 PM

Middlesbrough are ready to make a move for Newcastle striker Alan Smith.

Gareth Southgate was interested in bringing the England international to Teesside last summer before the former Manchester United forward chose to move to Tyneside, and is ready to make a move for the second summer in succession.

OddsPreview.com understands that a fee of around £4.5 million has been mentioned.

Smith failed to score in his first season at St James’ Park and should Michael Owen remain on Tyneside next season, he will likely find his opportunities limited as Toon boss Kevin Keegan looks set to continue with his attacking trio of Owen, Obafemi Martins and former Boro star Mark Viduka.

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is keen to reduce the club’s wage bill, and as one of the club's top earners, Smith could be shown the door.

Middlesbrough today confirmed that midfielder Fabio Rochemback will be leaving the Riverside Stadium after decided not to exercise an option to extend his contract.

The Brazilian joins Gaizka Mendieta and Dong Gook Lee, who will also be leaving Teesside this summer.
