Chris Hughton believes Joe Kinnear's arrival at Newcastle United will give the club "direction" and does not expect to have any problem working with his new colleague.

Friday afternoon saw the latest shock on Tyneside as the Magpies named Kinnear as their interim manager until the end of October as the search continues for a permanent boss.

And, Hughton - who has been serving as caretaker manager in the wake of Kevin Keegan's resignation - is happy with Kinnear's appointment..

"The most important thing is the direction of the club," Hughton told Sky Sports News.

"It was felt that the club needed someone to come in and, certainly for the period he is in, give that stability until something major happens.

"What everybody wants at the club is direction. The appointment, whether it is short-term or however long, is felt to be in the best interests of the club."

Hughton believes that the previous Premier League experience of Kinnear, who was in charge of Wimbledon between 1992 and 1999, will serve him well when dealing with the the club's senior players.

"He is an experienced manager and is someone who has been around for a long time," added Hughton. "He will know most of the players and be aware of their strengths and weaknesses."

And Hughton is looking forward to working with Kinnear after crossing swords with him in the past.

"I know Joe well from having my years at Spurs and playing against him when he was at Wimbledon," continued Hughton.

"I saw him lots of times outside of games and talked about football with him. It (a relationship with Kinnear) is more from the football circuit."

Hughton also confirmed that he expects Kinnear to take charge of the Newcastle squad on Monday, following the weekend clash with Blackburn.

"I will take the team, and then from Monday morning Joe will take over," said Hughton.

"It (managing the team) has been tough, but it is something that I have enjoyed doing. The disappointing thing is that we have not been able to pick up the results."
