Roger Federer won a fifth title at the Gerry Weber grasscourt ATP Open in Halle, beating Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3 6-4 to extend his winning streak on grass to 59 matches. Kohlschreiber had shocked second seed James Blake in the semi-final, but found Federer in powerful form. Federer will now prepare for Wimbledon where he will be going for a sixth consecutive title, an unprecedented feat in the open era. And in doing so, he restored some confidence after one of his worst defeats - a rout in the French Open final Sunday at the hands of rival Rafael Nadal. Federer was clearly pleased with his form - taking the 55th title of his career - in the Wimbledon warm up. "That was very special," he said. "I never lost my serve in this tournament, that had never happened to me." The Swiss player won the Weber Open for the first time in 2003, before going on to win his first Wimbledon title shortly afterwards.
His win over Kohlschreiber ensured a 24th straight success at the tournament. |
