The struggling Super Aguri Formula One team have withdrawn from this week's final pre-season test in Barcelona as talks continue with potential investors. Principal and founder Aguri Suzuki announced that the Honda-backed team had made the decision not to test pending ongoing negotiations. "As talks continue with Super Aguri F1, we have decided that we will focus our attention on preparing for the first race in Australia as the freight leaves shortly," he said. "We have therefore decided not to test in Barcelona this week." The team had planned to run two cars at the Circuit de Catalunya before heading to Melbourne for the Australian Grand Prix on March 16. Suzuki has been in Japan since last week discussing the way forward for a team that, despite support from Honda, has the smallest budget in Formula One and only just made it through to the end of last season after a non-payment by a key sponsor left them with little funding. The decision to scrap the final test means Aguri will arrive in Australia with a car that has covered far less mileage than its rivals. Although they have yet to name their driver line-up, Japan's Takuma Sato and Briton Anthony Davidson are expected to return for them. However Sato and Davidson have each taken part in just one test since December in an interim car. Aguri also cancelled their last planned test this month as well as the launch of the new SA08 car, which has passed the mandatory FIA crash test, due to "circumstances beyond our control". India's Spice Group, who have ties with the country's first Formula One driver Narain Karthikeyan through the A1GP series, were talking to Aguri last month about taking a possible stake in the team. |
