Hamilton hits back at critics @ Wednesday 7 May 2008, 10:41 AM

Lewis Hamilton has hit back at critics after falling nine points behind world championship leader Kimi Raikkonen in the standings.

The 23-year-old is under pressure to perform this season following a stellar debut in 2007 that saw him go so close to winning the world title.

But the McLaren driver has struggled behind the Ferraris since winning the Australian Grand Prix on the opening day of the season and faces his biggest test yet as a Formula One driver.

"A few people have questioned my commitment, my ability to drive," Hamilton told The Sun.

"I'm not Superman but I believe I have the ability to win a world championship.

"Everybody makes mistakes. I'm sure Nelson Mandela, at 90-odd, still makes mistakes. That's life.

"What people say about my performances does not really bother me - what does concern me is doing the job to the best of my abilities.

"Once we get everything right, our car is as quick as any. Then it is down to the driver to pull out extra bits of time. I think I can do that."
