The big driver move of the winter was Fernando Alonso's return to the Renault team where he won two World Championships in 2005 and 2006, sending Michael Schumacher into retirement in the process.

But the team he's going back to is a lot different from the team he left. He doesn't have a solid experienced teammate who knows how and is able to play the number 2 role. He has a young rookie with family connections in F1 as well as a close connection with his team and top F1 figures politically.

And we all saw in 2007 how well that worked out for Alonso.

I have to say regarding his time at McLaren, it's a sign of how highly he's thought of as a driver that a year in which he came within one point of retaining his World Title and finished level on points with Hamilton that people perceive the year as a giant failure where Hamilton dominated him.

With Alonso back, Renault should be better than they were last year. But the gap they have to make up is so huge that I think, barring a super wet race or something equally dramatic to even the playing field, getting a win is out of the question in 2008.

Getting a podium is even going to be tough. But I expect Alonso to improve the team to the point where he might get 3 or 4 of those at least. In Piquet's case, I know all we've seen so far is one qualifying session, but I'm not impressed.

I think he was brought into their team to placate Alonso by giving him a teammate he can beat easily, but without two drivers offering technical feedback and without two drivers in the midfield fight that I expect to happen, it can only be a detriment to the team and the development of the car in the long-term.
