This team has been on an upward growth in the last couple of years. They wanted to establish themselves in the midfield, and they did that. Then they wanted to establish themselves as by far the "best of the rest" and last year that's exactly what happened.

But, like BAR in 2004, have they just established themselves as best of the rest on a one-year fluke? This year, they'll be wanting consistent podiums, and to fight for a win. I don't think they'll get it.

Australia qualifying might make that a fairly stupid prediction that could be proved wrong by the time some of you get around to reading this, but hey I’m taking a shot here.

Their two drivers, although good and in Heidfeld's case consistent, I don't think they are superstars capable of delivering World Championship contention right now. Kubica makes too many mistakes, and Heidfeld I see in that Mark Webber role of being a good experienced guy who will drive his heart out and make very few mistakes, and be hard for a teammate to beat, but he's not a guy who can build a team around himself and deliver a championship.

Heidfeld and Kubica are probably the most evenly-matched driving partnership on the entire grid, and for Kubica that's bad news.

He came into Formula 1 and impressed, but for him Heidfeld is just about the worst possible teammate he could have. He's tough to beat, he's fast (the Quick Nick moniker is not people being ironic, its been earned), he won't cause any trouble within the team, he's just the kind of racer who will go out there and do a job with no fuss - and worst of all for Kubica, he's not on the downward spiral of his career at all.

If Kubica wants to be regarded as a future superstar, he needs to beat Heidfeld convincingly - and I just don't see that happening. He might need to leave the team to further his career in future.

I think BMW will be fighting in the midfield this year, and not get that elusive victory. And I think they will look back on their decision not to get involved in the battle to sign Fernando Alonso with regret.

He could've taken the team onto the podium consistently and got them that valuable first win, and maybe even got them fighting for the championship by 2009.
