Epsom officials expect course to quicken ahead of The Derby @ Thursday June 5

Epsom dried out to good to soft on Wednesday and officials expect the Classic course to quicken even further ahead of Saturday's Vodafone Derby - even though further rain is forecast to fall on Friday.

Clerk of the course Andrew Cooper changed his ground description on Wednesday from soft, good to soft in places, and issued a GoingStick reading of 6.8.

Cooper told the Racing Post: "It has been a warm, sunny day, a bit breezy at times, with temperatures in the low 20s.

"It is no surprise we are drying out and it's easy to forget just how quickly this place settles down.

"After walking the track, I didn't have much hesitation in describing the ground as good to soft. There is still ground that's onthe slower side, but there are also bits that are almost good.
"I would be reasonably confident that we will go into Friday on ground that is on the slow side of good.

"Where we end up on Saturday depends on what happens on Friday, as the forecastis for us to get some light and patchy rain at some point, totalling 2mm to 5mm.

"If that comes, it should be enough to hold the ground wherever it is at that stage. There are no plans to water."
