England's Nick Dougherty carded a 62 in the opening round of the Malaysian Open after he birdied 10 of his first 13 holes. Simon Dyson and Australia's Marcus Fraser were two shots back in second place after rounds of 64 on the Kota Permai course in Kuala Lumpur. Argentina's Daniel Vancsik finished with a 65. Dougherty enjoyed a run of seven straight birdies and managed to avoid any bogeys on his scorecard. "It was a great start to the tournament. It was my lowest round on the Tour and it sets me up well," said Dougherty. "It was nice to string some birdies together because that's one thing I've been lacking. It's superb to string seven together and 10 in all and have no bogeys." Dougherty admitted that thoughts of a historic 59 had crossed his mind after moving to 10 under, with five holes to play. "I knew it was on after I made a long birdie on the fourth. Three birdies in the last five is not that tall an order but, unfortunately, it didn't happen," he added. "It was there to be done but it didn't happen. Even so, I'm quite pleased with the score I got."
