Birmingham chairman David Gold and co-owner David Sullivan are threatening to walk away from the club. The duo were targeted by sections of the St Andrews crowd in the wake of the club's relegation back to the Championship for the second time in three years. Alex McLeish's side did everything they could to stay up as they defeated Blackburn 4-1, but it was all in vain with Fulham securing safety thanks to a 1-0 win at Portsmouth. The game was evenly balanced going into the final quarter — Morten Gamst Pederson's early second-half strike had wiped out David Murphy's long-range effort just after the half-hour — when trouble flared. But then a group of supporters strode along the gangway underneath the directors' box before turning on Messrs Sullivan and Gold and a clearly petrified managing director Karren Brady. With a line of police protecting the home directors it was clear that feelings were still running high. Gold looked to be in tears as the final whistle sounded, while Sullivan and his two sons became the subject of some fans' anger. An emotional Gold told Sky Sports News: "I was very disappointed today with some of the fans. "That's the first time in 15 years that I've received that kind of abuse, and I really don't want to be anywhere that I'm not wanted. "And if I'm not wanted then I think that I'll probably resign." And Sullivan added: "It's a sad end to the season and the reaction from the supporters was awful. "They want a change, but tell me how we make a change? There's not a queue of people who want to buy the club. "I don't want to be here any longer. I don't need that, I don't need my kids in tears, I don't need abuse. "I'd like somebody to buy my shares. Maybe David wants to buy my shares, I'd happily sell them. I'm a willing seller. "I personally at this moment in time would like to move on." |
