Rafa Benitez paid tribute to the quality and character of his Liverpool side following the 2-1 victory over Manchester United on Saturday.

"It was really good," Benitez told Sky Sports. "We conceded an early goal but after we showed character and we were on top against a good team with quality.

"We were working really hard and in the second half we were the best team.

"We were doing a good job in the first half but we wanted to win so we spoke about confidence and determination (at half-time)."

Benitez singled out Dirk Kuyt and Robbie Keane for special praise after the front two worked tirelessly for the team.

He said: "I think their understanding was really good. Both players were pressing, which meant that we could go a little bit higher, so I think that was really important for the team."

Steven Gerrard was not included from the start following an injury but he came on midway through the second half and Benitez feels his introduction gave Liverpool a crucial lift.

Benitez admits it was a gamble to bring on the midfielder, adding: "I thought that we could do something to win it so we took the risk.

"He was not fit for 15 days but he has the quality and the character and it was also a boost for the supporters."
