Australia have named Michael Clarke as their vice-captain for the tour of West Indies starting in May. Clarke, who captained the Twenty20 side earlier this year, fills the void left by the retirement of Adam Gilchrist. Stuart MacGill and Simon Katich were recalled to the Test squad, with Brad Haddin replacing Gilchrist as keeper. Uncapped Ashley Noffke, Ben Hilfenhaus and wrist spinner Beau Casson are also named, while Shaun Marsh, son of former coach Geoff, is in the one-day squad. Several Australian players have Indian Premier League contracts but they will have time to compete in the new Twenty20 tournament before the national squad assembles in Brisbane on 4 May, a week before leaving for the Caribbean.
A Twenty20 international will be played on June 20 followed by five one-day internationals, concluding on July 6. Chief selector Andrew Hilditch explained why Clarke was given the job ahead of some more experienced colleagues. "We have identified the need to look towards the future," he said. "We were thrilled with his performances as captain during the two Twenty20 international games this summer and believe he has outstanding leadership credentials. "While we had some very strong candidates within the current team, we had no hesitation in recommending Michael Clarke for the position." Queenslander Noffke, who made his one-day international debut against India in February, is handed a Test opportunity having impressed with bat and ball in the domestic game. With left-arm wrist spinner Brad Hogg having retired from the international arena, the selectors opted for a similar form of bowler in the shape of 25-year-old Casson, who took 29 Pura Cup wickets at 35 and scored 485 runs in the lower order at an average of 60. MacGill, now 37, has taken 203 wickets in 42 Tests, and is back in the reckoning following wrist surgery at the end of 2007. "Stuart looked very fit during the (first-class) final and performed to a high level," Hilditch said. Left-hander Katich, 32, has a Test average of 36 but played the last of his 23 matches in November 2005. He earned his return after setting a record 1,506 runs at an average of 94.12 in the 2007-08 Australian season. "I do know my game a lot better now," he said. "Being in and out of the team has taught me a lot of lessons. This time around I probably appreciate it a lot more." Left-arm seamer Nathan Bracken was selected subject to fitness following a knee operation. Test squad: Ricky Ponting (captain), Michael Clarke, Beau Casson, Stuart Clark, Brad Haddin, Matthew Hayden, Ben Hilfenhaus, Mike Hussey, Phil Jaques, Mitchell Johnson, Simon Katich, Brett Lee, Stuart MacGill, Ashley Noffke, Andrew Symonds. ODI squad: Ricky Ponting (captain), Michael Clarke, Nathan Bracken, Stuart Clark, Brad Haddin, Matthew Hayden, James Hopes, David Hussey, Mike Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Brett Lee, Shaun Marsh, Andrew Symonds, Cameron White. |
