Rijkaard on Wednesday left his post as manager of Turkish side Galatasaray by mutual consent and was almost instantly made favourite to be named as the next manager of Liverpool ahead of Martin O'Neill, who had been leading the market for some time but is now out to 12/1 (Sky Bet).
Rijkaard has reportedly stated in the last 24 hours that he wants to manage a Premier League club next and with pressure piling on Hodgson after a poor start to the season, punters have raced to put their money on the Dutchman.
As of Friday lunchtime, former Barcelona boss Rijkaard was a best price 8/13 with Paddy Power (£100 free bet) to be named as Liverpool's next manager - in from 6/4 just 24 hours earlier.
Hodgson has been told by Liverpool's new owners that his job is safe, but the pressure is on following last weekend's 2-0 defeat against bitter rivals Everton - a result that has left the Reds stuck in the relegation zone in the Premier League.
Hodgson has not helped himself this week by admitting that striker Fernando Torres could leave the club - words that Liverpool fans will not have wanted to hear.
Ahead of Thursday night's Europa League game away to Napoli, Hodgson said of Torres being linked with Manchester United as a replacement for Wayne Rooney: "I'm not naive enough to think there is no danger we'll ever lose Torres."
The former Fulham manager is at time of writing just 2/5 (also Paddy Power) to no longer be Liverpool manager before the end of the current season.
