Nadal was at his imperious best in his semi-final against Andy Murray, defeating the fourth seed 6-4 7-6 6-4. Murray produced one of the best serving performances of his career but from the back of the court he had no answer to Nadal’s often brutal forehands.
No other player in the history of the game has been able to hit shots with such devastating effect when appearing to be on the defensive.
Berdych will provide a different challenge for Nadal. At 6’5 he has a bomb of a first serve, regularly over 130 mph and will look to push Nadal back with high, kicking second serves, something he used very effectively in his win over Federer. He hits a very flat ball off both wings and crucially he possesses far more potency on his forehand than Murray so Nadal will not be able to target one side more than the other.
However, Nadal counter-punches like no other player and he will have the edge in this match due to his superior movement. If you let Berdych get his feet set then he will punish you all day with his huge groundstrokes but if you get him moving from side to side as Nadal will, you can get him off balance and that is why Nadal is likely to claim his eighth grand slam title this afternoon.
