Nathaniel 12/1 for the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes

Nathaniel is 12/1 with Victor Chandler for the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes after connections revealed they are considering supplementing him for the Ascot showdown.

The John Gosden-trained three-year-old is 11/4 favourite for the St Leger after his five-length success in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot, but could now compete against the likes of St Nicholas Abbey, Rewilding and Workforce in the midsummer highlight on Saturday week.

James Wigan, racing manager for owner Lady Rothschild, told the Independent: “It’s up in the air at the moment, but we are discussing the possibility.

“The ground will definitely be a factor, but good or good to soft would be fine.

“It would be a big ask, obviously. The difficulty is that there are very few races at this time of year.

“If you didn’t go, where would you go?

“It would depend on a few things, but if we were happy, and John felt the same way, then that would be our route.”

VC spokesperson Charlie McCann said: “The Derby winner Workforce flopped in the race last year and the Classic generation have tended to swerve the King George in recent years, with no three-year-old winning the race since Alamshar back in 2003.

“If the ground was no faster than good it would appear that connections of the impressive Royal Ascot winner are considering throwing their hat into the ring and that would be a real boost to the mid-season highlight.”
