Alexandre Gomes triumphed in the World Poker Tour curtain raiser – the Bellagio Cup V, despite starting the final table short stacked.

The Brazilian youngster has already made three monster cashes in his two year tournament career. He followed up a 1st place at the $2,000 NL Hold’em at the WSOP 2008 for $770,540 with an admirable 4th in the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure for $750,000.  His first WPT title sees him bag a handsome $1,187,000.

The veteran Full Tilt Pro Erik Seidel was the first to bust on the final table, moving in with a strong flush draw and over cards. On a 8s 5h 3s flop, Seidel’s Ks 9s was up against Justin Smith’s 99. The turn and river brought no respite for Seidel, and he was eliminated in 6th.

The final hand in heads-up came when Gomes’s AJ had Faraz Jaka’s A7 dominated. The 8d 6s 2c 6d 9s board gifted the former the coveted title. The final standings were as follows:

1st Alexandre Gomes $1,187,670
2nd Faraz Jaka $774,780
3rd Justin Smith $464,870
4th Alec Torelli $271,165
5th Christopher Sonesson $203,385
6th Erik Seidel $164,640
