Manchester United striker Rooney backed to be top goalscorer this season in the Premier League

The new Premier League season is fast approaching and William Hill report that they have been inundated with punters backing Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney to recover from his World Cup woe by being the Premier League's top scorer.

Rooney is the 5/1 joint favourite with last year’s winner Didier Drogba, while Chelsea target Fernando Torres is 13/2.

Hills have also opened a book on who will score the first hat trick of the season with Wayne Rooney the 7/2 favourite followed by Robin Van Persie at 9/2 and the scorer of two hat tricks last season, Jermain Defoe, at 5/1.

Hill’s spokesman Joe Crilly said: "Our punters seem to think that Wayne will shake off any ill effects from the World Cup and carry on banging in he goals for United come next season."
