Marca report that the Uruguay striker, who has also been linked with moves to Juventus and Liverpool, could move to the Bernabeu should coach Jose Mourinho decide he wants to add to his squad in the January transfer window.

Reports in Italy last week suggested Juve general manager Beppe Marrotta was keen to secure a deal for the player, while Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson was last week believed to have looked into signing the Uruguay forward as a possible replacement for Fernando Torres should the Spaniard decide to leave the club in the New Year or at the end of the season.

Karim Benzema has been linked with a move away from Madrid and should he be sold in January then it could open the door for 31-year-old Forlan to move across the city.

The €18m fee quoted by the Spanish newspaper is only around half of Forlan's buy-out clause and will likely put other clubs on alert.

Forlan enjoyed a great World Cup campaign with Uruguay last season but has struggled this season in Spain, with reports suggesting he could seek a move in January and that Atletico are ready to offload the former Manchester United striker.

United could also be interested in bringing the player back to England, as could Manchester City and Tottenham, while Juve could face competition from Serie A rivals Inter Milan.

Sky Bet on Tuesday evening made Juve 3/1 favourites to sign Forlan during the January transfer window, with Manchester City 6/1 and both Tottenham and former club Man Utd 10/1.
