AC Milan should be too good for Marseilles on Wednesday night

Since an embarrassing Champions League defeat to FC Zurich in September, AC Milan have found form, and the Italians have gone on a nine game unbeaten run, which has seen the side propelled to third place in Serie A, and on the verge of qualification for the Champions League knock-out stages.

A win for Leonardo’s side on Wednesday against Marseille would ensure that the club progress from Group C, and on form they should be able to reward punters who back them at 18/19 (Expekt) to do so.

Milan won two-one in Marseilles when the sides last met, and in the interim matches, they have improved dramatic, whilst Marseilles have not offered anything to suggest they are capable of coming away from the San Siro with all three points. The French side should, in fact, probably be longer than 7/2 (SkyBet) to beat Milan, and even the 5/2 (SkyBet) that the match is drawn is probably a little on the slim side.

Marseilles are currently 7th in the French league, and have only won two of their last six matches, losing to both Monaco and Valenciennes, two sides who are vastly inferior to Wednesday’s opponents. They have, however, won their last two Champions League fixtures, however, both were against FC Zurich, a side who, win against Milan apart, are one of the weakest teams in this year’s competition.

In their match at the Bernabeu, Marseilles were completely over-run by Real Madrid, and lost the game three-nil. Whilst the importance of Wednesday’s fixture probably rules out a repeat score-line (17/1, Expekt), it is clear that when they face Europe’s elite, Marseilles are a little short.

Milan, as previously stated, are in excellent form at the moment. Ronaldinho (8/1, Coral) whilst not quite managing to recapture his electrifying form of a few years ago, is finally settling into his role in the side, and has struck up an impressive performance with compatriot Alexander Pato (11/2, SkyBet). Champions league legend Filippo Inzaghi (6/1, Bet365), who scored twice the last time the sides met, should be back for this fixture, and the Marseilles defence will struggle to stop one of that trio from scoring.

With so much at stake, it is unlikely to be an open, free-flowing game, but that will also suit the Italians, whose midfield are happy to probe and wait for opportunities. Inzaghi only needs to beat the offside trap once to score, and Milan are capable of shutting down the game, and winning either one-nil (13/2, Boylesports) or two-nil (8/1, SportingBet).

If the game is tight, it could take a while for Milan to break down their French opponents, and those who want extra value from a home win could do a lot worse than back draw/AC Milan on the half-time/full-time market, at a tempting 4/1 (Bet365).
