On Sunday evening all of the World’s eyes will be on the Nou Camp stadium in Barcelona, for the first ‘Clasico’ of the new Real Madrid regime, as the two biggest clubs in football go head-to-head, in a game which will feature arguably the three finest footballers on the planet, plus a host of other internationally renowned superstars.

Real Madrid’s new ‘galactico’ era saw the club break the World’s transfer record twice over the summer, with both Kaka, and Cristiano Ronaldo arriving for a combined total of almost £150 million. The Madrid squad was also bolstered by Spanish stars Raul Albiol and Xabi Alonso, plus exciting young Frenchman Karim Benzema.

With Ronaldo back after a lay-off due to an ankle injury, all of Real’s big-names should be available for Sunday’s match, where they will be up against last season’s treble winners, Barcelona, complete with their own array of attacking talent, including Thierry Henry, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Lionel Messi.

The latter two were left on the bench for Barca’s 2-0 Champions League win over Inter Milan on Wednesday, but will be fit, and available for Sunday’s game, where the home side are 10/11 (Totesport) to come away with all three points.

Real are 10/3 (Coral) to leave the Nou Camp with a win, which would take them four points ahead of their rivals at the top of La Liga, and with Ronaldo (13/2, Bet365) back in the side, they have every chance of getting a result. Real have won every game that the Portuguese has featured in this season, whereas without the former Manchester United winger, they managed just five wins in ten matches.

Ronaldo will be joined in the Madrid attack by Kaka (12/1, Ladbrokes), Raul (12/1, Ladbrokes), and Gonzalo Higuain (17/2, Bet365). Argentine striker Higuain has scored in each of his last four starts, and has six goals in his last six games. He was the club’s top-scorer last season, and could cause problems for a Barcelona defence which could be pre-occupied by the threat of Ronaldo and Kaka.

Barcelona’s threat will come, as always from the irrepressible talent of Lionel Messi (6/1, Bluesq), who along with Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11/2, Bluesq) is the club’s joint top-scorer with seven La Liga goals so far this season.

With both clubs committed to playing exciting, attacking football, the match could contain plenty of goal-mouth action. The last meeting of the sides, in a La Liga crunch match at the bernabeu last season, ended in a whopping six-two win for Barcelona. Whilst a repeat of that score is an unlikely 300/1 (Bet365), it is safe to assume the game will contain goals. StanJames’ 4/6 quote that the match contains three or more goals looks slightly out of line with other bookies, and the same firm offer 6/4 that the match will go over 3.5 goals. Ambitious punters, who watched Barcelona beat Real’s city rivals Atletico Madrid five-two, and fancy a similar score-line on Sunday can get 7/1 (WilliamHill) that the match has six or more strikes.

An early goal in the game could spark a goal frenzy, and a four-two Barcelona win is not inconceivable, and at 50/1 (Bet365) could be an attractive interest bet for long odds punters.
There is always the danger, in games of this magnitude, that both teams cancel each other out, and although there is probably too much attacking talent in both teams for a goal-less draw (16/1, SportingBet), a one each tie (7/1, Bluesq) is definitely possible.

Real would certainly settle for a draw (14/5, VictorChandler) but unfortunately for Manuel Pelligrini, the game may have come a few weeks too early for his side. Barcelona are a stable side, and they showed with their comfortable two-nil win over Inter Milan on Tuesday that they are capable of raising their game when required.

Real Madrid, by contrast are very much a work in progress, and Pelligrini is still striving to find the right balance in his side. They were incapable of beating AC Milan in either of their two Champions League encounters, and also lost to Sevilla earlier on the season. These are the only sides that Real have faced this season who are anywhere near the calibre of Barcelona, and no wins from three against Europe’s elite sides could well turn into no wins from four on Sunday night.
