Flintoff 7/1 joint favourite to take the 10,000th Ashes wicket at The Oval

Ladbrokes have opened a book on who will go down in Ashes history as the 10,000th batsman out.

With the scores tied at 1-1 going into the fifth and final Test match at The Oval, 9,983 wickets have been taken.

Australia's Nat Thomson became the first Ashes victim when he was bowled for just one run at the MCG by Yorkshireman Allen Hill on March 15, 1877.

England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff is favourite to become the quintuple figure victim - or take his wicket - depending if his side are batting or bowling.

The firm have also priced up on which day the 10,000th wicket will be taken and make the third day of play (Saturday) 5/4 favourite.

Whoever the unlucky batsman is, is 4/7 to be caught out, 10/3 given LBW and 4/1 to be bowled.

Ladbrokes spokesman Robin Hutchison said: "Getting out is never a good feeling for any batsman, but writing yourself into history in doing so may at least soften the blow."

Flintoff is 7/1 joint favourite with James Anderson and Mitchell Johnson to take the 10,000th wicket and is 10/1 alongside Aussie wicket keeper Brad Haddin to become the statistic himself.

England are 7/2 outsiders to win at The Oval but are being well-supported despite their huge defeat at Headingley.

Australia are 6/4 to clinch the series 2-1, with the draw 6/5.
