Kevin Pietersen was included in the 16-man test squad despite still recovering from the Achilles tendon operation which sidelined him for part of the Ashes series victory over Australia this summer.

England's selectors have named three uncapped players in the Test squad, with Surrey wicketkeeper Steven Davies, Yorkshire leg-spinner Adil Rashid and Sussex all-rounder Luke Wright all included.

Bowler Liam Plunkett, a team mate of Harmison's at Durham, has also been recalled for the tour which begins in November.

England will compete in four Tests and five one-day internationals in South Africa.

Early betting sees England a best price 9/2 with Stan James to win the Test series with South Africa 8/15 with Ladbrokes and the draw 4/1 with bet365.

Test squad: Andrew Strauss (Captain), Alastair Cook, James Anderson, Ian Bell, Stuart Broad, Paul Collingwood, Steven Davies, Graham Onions, Kevin Pietersen, Liam Plunkett, Matt Prior, Adil Rashid, Ryan Sidebottom, Graeme Swann, Jonathan Trott, Luke Wright.
