Amir Khan ready for Floyd Mayweather after one more fight

- 27 Jul 2011
Amir Khan's trainer Freddie Roach believes the Bolton-born fighter needs just one more bout before he will be ready to face Floyd Mayweather Jr.

The Olympic silver medallist is on a high after a comprehensive victory over Zab Judah to claim the IBF light-welterweight title on Saturday night.

Khan's demolition of an experienced fighter like Judah, coupled with his fight of the year victory over Marcos Maidana in December, has got the boxing world sat up and taking notice.

Promoters Golden Boy are now thought to be trying to hammer out a deal for Khan to face Mayweather in a huge contest next year.

The unbeaten Mayweather takes on Victor Ortiz next in September and the winner of that bout will take on Khan, although many will expect him to fight both before his career is over.

With Tim Bradley also waiting in the wings the list of boxers wanting to take on Khan is growing.

However, Roach says the 24-year-old firmly has his sights set on Mayweather, but only after he has got another fight under his belt.

I do believe Amir's speed can trouble Mayweather but Mayweather is a very good boxer and is very slick.Freddie Roach

“I do believe Amir's speed can trouble Mayweather but Mayweather is a very good boxer and is very slick," he said.

"We'd love to take on the winner of his fight with Victor Ortiz.

"Mayweather isn't fighting until September and it can't happen right away, so I'd like to slip one more fight in there before then."

Mayweather is 1/8 with bet365 to win his next fight against Ortiz, who is 5/1 to upset the 'Pretty Boy'.
